Art21 is deeply saddened by the passing of Agnes Gund, arts patron, philanthropist, and tireless champion for social justice. Aggie was a longtime friend of the organization and one of our earliest and most steadfast supporters, helping to shape our mission from the very beginning.
For over two decades, Aggie believed in Art21’s vision of making contemporary art accessible to all. She underwrote the Susan Sollins Executive Director and Chief Curator position, helping to ensure the organization could continue to thrive with strong leadership. She was integral to the success of the Art21 for Everyone capacity-building campaign, supporting position Art21 as the global leader in amplifying the work and profiles of contemporary artists.
In her own words, Aggie once described Art21 as “revolutionary in how it presents contemporary art in such a compelling and accessible way. Presenting the artists thematically and in the context of our time, the artists become heroes, stars, and newsmakers.” This shared belief in seeing artists as role models inspires our work every day.
We are honored to have had her partnership and friendship over so many years. Her legacy will live on through Art21 and the countless organizations that she uplifted.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to Aggie’s family, friends, and all who were touched by her life and vision.
